Black History Month: My Favorite Black Owned Brands
As we enter into Black History Month, it brings me great joy to celebrate those entrepreneurs who are making their mark in the fashion world. As a fashion content creator, I consistently purchase a plethora of items to diversify my wardrobe. That being said, I shop and support black owned brands year round. Below I have listed Black Owned brands that I have patronized, and one (Amina Iris) that I will be purchasing from soon. The quality of the items from each of these designers is outstanding.
ShaButter. Of course I have to showcase ShaButter as my all time favorite Black Owned brand. The founder is currently in graduate school (she will graduate in May 2022), and will proudly tell you exactly how many days she has left, if you dare to ask. She is a wife, and mother of two amazing boys. She started her company after numerous people kept asking her what she was using on her skin to make it so beautiful. Recently, she added a hair growth oil as well as a skin and hair oil to her lineup of products. Lastly, she’s the daughter of your favorite (hopefully) YouTuber… yours truly. Yes, she’s my baby and I couldn't be more proud of her.
House of Rehab. House of Rehab has created a beautiful bag with a factual and realistic message at a reasonable price point. I love this bag. It’s so cute and the shape is on trend. The silver works very well with my silver sneakers and it’ll get a lot of wear throughout the Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall.
Hanifa. What can I say other than her style is MAGNIFICENT! Recently, I was invited to attend her first live fashion show in Washington D.C.. It was AMAZING. The new Spring collection was vibrant, animated, unique, and very feminine. The brand is very size inclusive (she even had models of every size and height in the fashion show), ranging from an XS to 2X.
Brandon Blackwood. Brandon Blackwood bags have been all the rave since last year when his iconic “end systemic racism” tote went viral. His bags come in various materials and colors and range from an approximate $165, but can be as costly at $8,500 (for genuine crocodile).
Amina Iris. After watching her documentary (her real name is Wilglory Tanjong) on CNBC Make It, I was sold! She started this brand with money her mother left for her (after she passed away). She’s under 25 years old, and started the brand while attending college (she attended Princeton University). The bags are hand sewn by artisans in Senegal and well worth the price.
Curvy Couture. Curvy Couture is the largest privately owned lingerie company in the U.S. Their mission “to uplift curvy women, in both body and mind, through artful innovation that celebrates her best self” says it all. Their sizes range from a 34DD to 46H.
Spergo. I first heard about Tre, the young man (now 15) on my favorite YouTube investment channel “Earn Your Leisure”. I was instantly captivated by his story of tenacity and determination. His story is one that American dreams are made of. Since starting his brand, he has acquired a brick and mortar store and retired his mother so she can work full time with his business. Although I don’t personally know him, he makes me immensely proud.
